The number of field wires from the sprinkler controller needed to drive new lawn sprinkler and garden irrigation valves varies by the expander model. Installation of an Irrigander irrigation expander in an irrigation system is simple. The Irrigander expander Encoder is installed at the sprinkler controller and connected to one or more wires in the irrigation cable. The Decoder is installed close to lawn sprinkler valves or garden irrigation valves to be controlled and is connected to the irrigation cable wires from the sprinkler controller. Once installed in an irrigation system, Irrigander irrigation expanders require no attention.

Sub-dividing lawn sprinkler zones and garden sprinkler zones or adding drip irrigation zones is an easy way to conserve water and reduce sprinkler system operating costs. Since the Irrigander irrigation expanders use the existing sprinkler field wiring from the irrigation controller there is no need for trenching and for pulling new cable to drive new irrigation valves, greatly reducing cost of installation. An Irrigander expander can help conserve water but it can also be used to bypass a broken irrigation controller wire saving money on a sprinkler repair.
